The Associated Press revealed in July of 2005 that the risk of suffering from a blood clot while using the Ortho Evra birth control patch was three times higher than when using standard birth control pills. On November 10, 2005, the FDA updated the label for the Ortho Evra birth control patch stating that the patch deposits much more estrogen into the bloodstream than a birth control pill. The increased estrogen exposure creates an increased risk for multiple negative side effects, including blood clots, stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, and death.
