  • Research Continues to Suggest that Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy Poses Autism Risk for Children

    In March of 2017, a research group published a study in the joural “European Psychiatry” that was a meta-analysis and systemic review of the relationship between maternal SSRI exposure and the risk of autism in the offspring of those mothers. The paper concluded that:

    The evidence from the present study suggests that prenatal exposure to SSRIs is associate with a higher risk of ASD

    This conclusion was based on a review of seven epidemiological studies published in the literature that looking into the association between the use of SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, during pregancy and the risk of having a child on the autism spectrum.

    Just this year, a separate study was published in JAMA Pediatrics finding that:

    Prenatal SSRI expsoure has an association with fetal brain development, particularly in brain regions critical to emotional processing

  • New Research Bolsters Connection Between Autism and Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy

    A research paper published last year by scientists at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health provided further evidence of a connection between pregnant mothers use of certain type of medications, known as selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors or “SSRIs”, used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and other medical conditions, and an increased risk for offspring with autism spectrum disorder or ASD.  An association was also found between the use of these drugs and developmental delays in boys.  The article appeared in an online version of the Journal of Pediatrics.  The study demonstrated that the greatest risk is associated with prenatal SSRI use during the first trimester of pregnancy, where the risk of having an autistic boy was nearly 3-times greater than for those mothers that were not given the medication.

    Table 2 lists starting doses used for treatment of frown lines with the three FDA-approved botulinum toxin products. This binding can be clinically evaluated as an increase in the patient’s muscular strength and can establish the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis in 90—95% of those suspected of having the disease. Rifamycins: (Moderate) Inducers of CYP3A4, such as rifamycins, may induce the hepatic metabolism of buprenorphine, which may lead to opiate withdrawal or inadequate pain control.

    There are a number of other risks associated with taking these drugs during pregnancy including the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, as well as children born with congenital heart defects, clubfoot,and other rare birth defects.  These medical findings require that doctors and patients be fully informed of the risks of starting or continuing one of these medications before or during a pregnancy so that the risks and benefits of drug use can be weighed as part of a healthy treatment regimen.

    As the evidence continues to mount, Nidel Law, P.L.L.C. continues to investigate the potential relationship between these medications and the risk of having children with an ASD.  As we continue this investigation, we are interested in hearing from parents of children that have been diagnosed with autism spectrum diseases (ASD).
