Risperdal is a powerful antipsychotic drug, originally designed to treat people with schizophrenia. But the drug was marketed and often prescribed to children for “behavioral disorders.”
In November, Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay the Federal Government over $2.2 Billion to settle civil and criminal charges regarding its marketing of Risperdal to children and others which was not approved by the FDA. Johnson & Johnson had previously settled similar claims prosecuted by individual state governments for hundreds of millions of dollars. Johnson & Johnson’s off-label marketing and subsequent settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice has brought new attention to Johnson & Johnson’s profit tactics and sale of Risperdal specifically..
Risperdal has been linked to a condition in boys and men called Gynecomastia, which causes excessive breast growth. The combination of this devastating side-effect and Johnson & Johnson’s illegal marketing scheme forms a firm basis for legal claims against Johnson & Johnson.
